So here it is, my new car! (and by "new", I mean "NEW!") It's an '09 Ford Fusion, in "tuxedo black" (it might not show up in the pictures, but it sparkles in direct sunlight). It has a dark grey interior, is quite spacious inside, and came with 6 free months of Sirius satellite radio! I am quite happy to report that it has an auxiliary audio jack, so I no longer need a cassette adapter to listen to my mp3 player! And of course, it has power windows, locks, power drivers seat, etc...

Take a look for yourself, here it is! :-)

And to answer your question: you can see it/ride in it whenever I see you next (whoever happens to be asking). And no, you can't drive it (at least, not yet).

me? i got in an accident! (but both people involved are fine!)

for the record, it was totally not my fault (the police even say so), and my car's totaled (just got the semi-official word on that tonight, so not sure on what value they will offer me yet)

summary: i was driving down Rt 138 in raynham, and another driver tried to cross over from a side-street on the right, to a gas station on the left.... and didn't see me right in the way, so they nailed the side of my car!

so basically, i've spent the week on the phone a million times, and 3 stops at the police station!

/me has to go car shopping now!

Photo Importing heaven

So now that my computer is rebuilt and better than ever (tm), I was finally able to empty out the memory card that had been sitting around, waiting for a computer to put the pictures on. However, i realized something, that i had taken for granted before: i used to use Canon ZoomBrowser EX for copying my pictures from the memory card, even after i had lost my canon camera and have been using my wife's sony; ZoomBrowser EX, by default, creates folders based on the date each picture was TAKEN, in the format "YYYY_MM_DD", which is instantly sorted chronologically (unlike "MM_DD_YYYY", which sorts by MONTH and date, but not by year).

However, i could no longer find the CD with ZoomBrowser EX on it. (and in truth, it's a kinda slow and bulky program, and i far more enjoy using Google's Picasa 3 for looking at my pictures, plus it has great editing features, like simply red eye removal).

So, i went in search of another program to import my pictures from my memory card, in the way i wanted them copied.... and honestly, it was very hard to find! Picasa itself does not do it (you can choose the destination, but it's for ALL the pictures you import); the software that came with our sony automatically puts them into a folder, with the date of the day you are IMPORTING THEM... which honestly, is the stupidest way to sort pictures EVER (in my opinion, of course!).

Anyway, after much googling and googling and screaming and a little bit of mild cursing, i found a solution! The "Digital Image Mover" (DIM) is a program by a guy called Alan Light (i know that because his website is his name); it's a small java program, and it's SOLE PURPOSE it so copy pictures from one location to another; it is very customizable and has some great options: it can create a backup copy on another disk/location for you as it copies to your main destination, for one, which is great. You can totally customize the folder structure it uses, based on the EXIF data (the data your camera automatically embeds within the picture file); so you could have nested folders (i.e. 2009\01\25), or you can have folders like i prefer (2009_01_25); you can have it rename the pictures as it copies them (based on many different things)... etc, etc!

So basically, i'm trying to say that if you want to have a great, simple program that just copies your pictures over for you, but does it really well, then GO GET DIM! http://www.alanlight.com/dim/Dim.htm

comments about Pocket Civ

Astute observers (or people who follow me on twitter, or via my twitter rss feed) saw that I said, back on Monday, that I would be posting a played-once review, that evening, on Pocket Civ. The astute observer would also have noted, I didn't do so! However, it is not because I failed to play... I just haven't finished the game yet!

I played for about 30-45 minutes monday evening (my first attempt at the game)... my first few turns were spent flipping back and forth through the rules, and trying to figure out what manner of advancements/actions (very few of which are available at first) would actually progress my civilization (example: my last turn before stopping for the evening, I finally built my first city :-P). I do plan on continuing that game (perhaps tonight), and even after just that bit of time playing, I was starting to get more of a hang of how it was going... my first few turns were all rules-flipping and record-keeping, and not all that fun, but building some farms, and then a city, definitely started things moving; I expect it to be more enjoyable as I keep going. Expect more comments, and perhaps a full review, after I have completed my game... whenever that happens to be!

I added a new list to the side-bar, "Games I Distinctly Recall Finishing"... which seems weird, I know, but I NEVER finish video games (that's obviously an exaggeration, or else the list would be blank)...

anyway, in an effort to uhh ok I don't know why, I have decided to list the ones I can definitely recall finishing (please note that I do not mean I "completed" it... I might not have gone back to get all the little extra awards, or whatever crap certain games had... I simply made it to the end, and beat it)

there are only 2 games in the list right now (HL1 and Halo1), tho I expect to add Lock's Quest (NDS) soon... I always get distracted by some new game, so I never actually finish them... I am working to be better about that, though. If you (by which I mean DP) can recall others that I should have put on the list, please let me know :)

So I thought up this character this morning... I doubt I'll ever use him in a story (but you never know!), so I wanted him to at least be recorded somewhere.

Name: The Engineer (true identity to be determined!)
Appearance: A fairly large, well-built man (I see him as looking something like Mr. T, but without all the gold chains). He wears a railroad Conductor's cap (and yet he is called the Engineer! can't you already see the fans getting into huge arguments about why this doesn't match?? :-D )
Age: Probably upper 30s or so.
Catchy-slogan-that-he-uses-way-too-often: "Who wants a ticket to the pain train?"

I am not sure if he's a "good guy" or a "bad guy" (perhaps he borders the line? I have no idea, it was early in the morning, and I wasn't thinking straight).

Anyway, that's it... I just felt like sharing!

the "black" sections are supposed to be a shiny-looking metal, but there was no matching material in SketchUp (even after adding the materials bonus pack)... and since i was neither motivated, nor properly equipped, to attempt to take a picture of the surface of the desk to make at texture with, i cropped out a piece of another picture (the back of a PSP, actually), to use instead

Surviving without Robert Jordan

As posted by myself previously, with the sad passing of author Robert Jordan, the Wheel of Time series has been left without an ending. I am happy to pass along, that an author has been chosen to finish the last book (based on the many notes/drafts/etc already created by Jordan), with an expected release of Fall, 2009. This is good news! ...of course, now we all have to wait 2 years...

Another report, this one by a policeman helping with the emergency evacuations, gives some of the details of the final approach of the object.

So I was out there, ya see, helping to direct traffic for the evacuees, and things was going pretty smooth-like. And everyone was a little panicky, driving a little crazy-like, but that's to be expected, what with the impending doom and all. So anyway there I was, out directing traffic, like I says, and off in the distance I see a strange glowing kinda thing, up in the sky... at first I didn't pay it no mind, because everyone knows that meteors burn up in the air and all, so I didn't think it was nothing to worry about. But it kept getting closer and closer, and and bigger and bigger, and pretty soon everyone started seeing it too, even in their cars, and folks was getting mighty desperate to get out of there, cuz it looked like it was headin' right for us. Now, I won't say I was a hero or nuthin, cuz I ain't, but I didn't abandon my traffic-directin', no I did not. See, I figured that if I could see it that clearly already, there was no way I could get away from it anyway, so what's the point in leaving what I was supposed to be doing?

Anyway, it kept coming closer, and getting lower, and it was definitely not burning up or nothing, it was all like glowing and shiny, like a newly polished pearl, only huge of course, and heading right for town. Around this time, most people started just abandoning their cars, and running away, tho I really don't know where they think they was heading that was gonna help, ya know?

So then, I could see that it was slowing down, as it got closer, see... and I didn't think that was really normal, but I wasn't worried too much about its speed, cuz I figured we was all dead anyway. But it kept slowing down, and slowing down, and finally it got over the center of town, right over the square, see... and it stopped moving! It just sorta sat there, up in the sky, and then it slowly started lowering itself down, like it was coming in for a landing! I felt for sure I was gonna meet some aliens, that I did!

As I was sayin', it kept lowering itself down, a lot slower than you'd expect, and when it was about about as high as a house, it stopped. It didn't' slow down no more or anything: it was moving, and then it just wasn't moving no more.

So at this point, I kinda realized that the cars I was directing, didn't have no more people in them, so I was kinda just wasting my time. So I started walking over towards the meteor, or whatever it was, and it was so pretty. So very pretty. It kept glittering, and I think it was rotating around a little, real slow-like. And there was all so many beautiful colors on it, all swirling around, like ripples on a pond, only prettier. And there was reds, and blues, and yellows, and other colors I don't even think we have words for yet, and they was swirling around... and the colors, oh they was so pretty, they were just swirling around so nice...

The rest of the officer's report devolved into incoherent ramblings about the sight of the object, and he was subsequently treated for acute psychosis, brought on by excessive mental trauma and extreme stress. Regardless, this remains the most detailed, close-up description of the object, both during and immediately after its “landing” maneuver.

From a report filed by an officer of the National Guard, regarding the events she witnessed in the early morning of Friday, June 12th, 2015.

My unit approached the most populated area in our designated target zone, bringing with us as many empty troop-carrier trucks as we managed to find before heading out. We went in as fast as possible, with the desperate hope that we would be able to load up our trucks with anyone and everyone we came across, and then rush them back out of the area as quickly as possible, hopefully getting them out of the area about to be destroyed by the incoming meteor.

En route to our destination, we received radio communications, indicating that the meteor was beginning to slow down as it approached the surface. This made very little sense to us, however it did mean we had that much more time to save as many people as possible.

We had fully loaded two of our trucks, and sent them heading out of the risk-area. On approaching our next designated way point, we saw something strange in the sky overhead. Far above us, something seemed to... shimmer faintly, as it passed by us. Our radio had been filled with nothing but interference for a while, something we had anticipated as the electromagnetic effects of the meteor's approach affected us, so we could neither report it at the time, nor ask what we might be seeing. The object passed overhead, although its progress was difficult to track directly... we couldn't actually see it, the air in its vicinity just seemed to glow and shake. After it passed us, we went back to work, intent on our objectives.

The above report is the earliest reliable eye-witness account of the passage of the meteor. While not viewed directly, its passage overhead was detectable from the ground at this point, its outer core, as mentioned previously, having burned away after entry into the atmosphere.

Being a full and complete recording of the events related to Study Material 7536 (SM-7536).
Beginning in the year 2015 A.D., and extending to include all appropriate time periods and intervals.
Record follows.

The meteor was first detected by an observatory in Australia, and given a non-memorable designation. It's expected trajectory was to take it past Jupitor, pass “close” to Earth (in solar terms), and then after a hook around the Sun, it would leave our Solar System, never to be seen again. This, of course, did not happen quite as expected.

As more and more observatories picked up the watch it, its course seemed to change. It first swung away from Jupiter, as if attempting to avoid its gravity well. Then, it cut violently back across the sky, swung around Jupiter, and hurled away on its new trajectory. This new path would, without any doubts, hurl it directly into Earth.

Once news of the impending impact reached the media, the story exploded across the news mediums. CNNBC’s well-known “World Events Blog" (WEB) carried the most detailed and up-to-date records of the approach of the meteor, and its effect on humans the world over. Amongst the varied doomsday stories provided elsewhere, were just as many questioning what the various world governments were going to do about it. It was soon apparent that there was absolutely nothing that anyone could do about it.

The meteor entered Earth's atmosphere at approximately 2:13am, local time, over New York City. The fireball of its super-heated entry was viewable across most of the eastern and central United States. Military and civilian radar stations located nearby tracked it continuously, and plotted its course, predicting the location of its devastating, inevitable touch-down. This location is believed to have been Charleston, South Carolina, however there are some conflicting reports regarding this matter.

While unexplainable at the time, it is now known that the sudden disappearance to the naked eye of the object while on its way to the surface, was due to the outer core finally burning away. The inner material, being far more resistant to heat, friction, and in fact nearly all other physical energies, did not burn. Radar continued to track it, until it finally dropped too low for radar to follow. Local forces, including police and a portion of the National Guard, rushed towards its expected landing point, hoping to be able to evacuate at least a portion of the population living in the area. What they found there stunned them all.

so like, yea! time for an update! today's entry into awesomeness: a review of a store! :-p

Store in Question: Ikea - Stoughton, MA

So ok, we went on a tax-free holiday... but still, it took about 10 minutes to get a parking spot... i hear that on busy days, that's NOT A LONG WAIT! :-/ ... this is the first warning sign.

so we finally park, we go in... i grab (out of habit) a little "store guide" thing... which has a page for writing down things you are interested in (turns out to be needed/useful, more on that later)... but mostly it just has a map... this isn't just for looks, people...USE THE MAP OR YOU WILL GET LOST!!!

so yes, you wander around, you go "OMG THIS IS SO CHEAP" a lot (keeping in mind... do NOT expect a computer desk that costs $19.99 be built of anything other than particle board.. and notice, the word "effect" after "birch"... IT ISN'T EVEN VENEER, IT'S LIKE PAINT-CRAP! ... but they look nice... AND IT'S A DESK FOR $20!!!

so let's say you want said computer for $20... but out in the main part of the store, they only have the displays!... so you write down the aisle/bin # listed on the tag... (remember that sheet to write down things you want?) ...and at the end of the store (downstairs...yes, it's 2 levels, you start upstairs and work around the paths)... you get to the Self-Serve Funriture Area: a warehouse section the size of MOST RETAIL STORES, where you go find the boxes to the stuff you want... then you go buy stuff :)

other notes: the restaurant had good prices, tho i didn't try eating anything, we spent enough time there as it was :-p

the carriages had a few interesting things: all 4 wheels can turn 360 degrees, so you can POWERSLIDE with those babys... WOOOO!

the carriages also had these weird round discs mounted up against one side of each wheel... at first i thought they were to give enough friction so that the wheels would always turn whichever way you tried to go... but on the way out, i realized what they actually were...

see, on the way out, unless you take the elevators to get back to the parking garage, you take the carriage down an escalator RAMP... which is hot, but i had been worried about errant carriages running people down... BUT THOSE DISCS ARE MAGNETS!!! so yea, once you walk onto the escalator ramp, the carriage locks itself down... it was quite hot! MAGNETIC CARRIAGES BABY!!!

summary of ikea: don't go when it's busy... expect to spend 2+ hours there... but overall, the store is quite clean, and they have a TON of stuff...

overall rating: cool_store++

Magnetica DS DEMO Review

Ok, so yeah a review of a demo is kinda lame, but I played it for a while yesterday, and I figured I'd say what I thought.

Premise: Magnetica is a puzzle game... a random assortment of marbles are sliding down a track, and somewhere within that path (always near the end point) you have a little launcher-thingy, from which you can fire off new marbles. Using the stylus, you flick the marbles where you want them to go, and off they fly! Get three marbles of the same color together, and they vanish. If the lead marble on the track reaches the end-point, it's GAME OVER!

Gameplay: As puzzle games go, this one isn't too bad... if you have groups of like-colored marbles, seperated by others, you can remove the ones in between, and the "magnetic attraction" will pull the similar ones together, creating chain-reactions ("chains"). However, that's about the only "extra" move you can do... you're just flicking marbles at other marbles, until you get rid of them all, or they reach the end-point. Within the demo, there were 2 different boards (1 for the regular challenge mode, the other for the "quest" mode)... which did add some variety, but not as much as i would have liked to have seen. Quest mode also featured a few items (beyond the very few within challenge mode), but none of these served to keep the game interesting for long.

Overall: Graphics were pleasant, but not in the way of playing the game. Sounds were not impressive, but not annoying either. Gameplay was never very exciting, sadly. All in all, you'd be better served with Meteos.

so i walk over to the EB next door (yes, next door) and i stand outside (i would have had a better signal inside, but i have been inside there the past 2 days straight, i don't want to start a pattern)...

so i hook up to the "DS Download Station", and i get a list to pick from... so i download the demo to Meteos, and it's pretty fun... not OMG SO HOT, but fun... prolly worth $20, if i feel in the mood to pick it up at some point

but yea. i downloaded a demo. for my handheld console. WITH my handheld console.

how hot is that?!

for those who care, the demo goes away once i turn off the console... however, if you just flip the thing shut, it goes into power-saving "sleep mode", and can stay that way for like a WEEK (on a full battery)... and of course you can still recharge it while it's like that... so i pretty much have the demo until i decide to play one of my other games on it

Although I have been known to proclaim the heart-felt joys of Podcasts for some time now, I generally do not suggest any particular one (other than suggesting new ones for people already "in the know", on occasion).

I am now making an exception to that.

Brave Men Run, a podiobook by Matthew Wayne Selznick, is the best audiobook I believe I have ever listened to. And, since podiobooks are the best thing to happen to podcasts since XML, I think it's my favorite podcast of all time!

And I've only heard 3 episodes so far!

Basically, I would summarize the story as "it's like x-men...but with real people". It is a novel "of the sovereign era"... the "sovereigns" are basically the "mutants"...humans with extra, or enhanced, abilities. The story revolves around a high-school kid named Nate...and he really seems like a real high-school kid. The story is well written, I can relate to the characters well... I'm definitely enjoying this story!

Reports indicate that the recent 'fest in Newport, RI, had over 30 restaurants on-site, showing off their chowder ( http://www.newportfestivals.com/Chowder_Cook_Off/ ).

How many did Boston have, you ask? Surely they have a large number, being a large city, central in New England, with tons of restaurants in the area, you say.

You would be wrong.

But wait! It gets BETTER! One of the three (the group that WON THE VOTE FOR BEST CHOWDER LAST YEAR!)...ran out of chowder. Less than half-way through the event.

All I have to say is: when the booth giving out free samples of baked beans is better than your main event... you are doing something very, very wrong.

Weapons of Math Instruction

At New York's Kennedy airport today, an individual later discovered to be a public school teacher was arrested trying to board a flight while in possession of a ruler, a protractor, a set square, a slide rule, and a calculator.

At a morning press conference, an official said he believes the man is a member of the notorious al-gebra movement. He is being charged by the FBI with carrying weapons of math instruction.

"Al-gebra is a fearsome cult,", he said. "They desire average solutions by means and extremes, and sometimes go off on tangents in a search of absolute value. They use secret code names like "x" and "y" and refer to themselves as "unknowns", but we have determined they belong to a common denominator of the axis of medieval with coordinates in every country. "As the Greek philanderer Isosceles used to say, there are 3 sides to every triangle," Ashcroft declared.

When asked to comment on the arrest, he said "If God had wanted us to have better weapons of math instruction, he would have given us more fingers and toes.

"I am gratified that our government has given us a sine that it is intent on protracting us from these math-dogs who are willing to disintegrate us with calculus disregard. Murky statisticians love to inflict plane on every sphere of influence," he said, adding: "Under the circumferences, we must differentiate their root, make our point, and draw the line."
He warned, "These weapons of math instruction have the potential to decimal everything in their math on a scalene never before seen unless we become exponents of a Higher Power and begin to factor-in random facts of vertex."

He said, "As our Great Leader would say, read my ellipse. Here is one principle he is uncertain of: though they continue to multiply, their days are numbered as the hypotenuse tightens around their necks...."

i just realized that when i drink coke from a can (i don't think i do this when it's not coke, or not a can)...i almost-completly close my jaw, so that 90% of the soda flows through/around my teeth, instead of just into my mouth...i don't know why i do this (i would guess it reduces the amount of "bubbles" i'm getting, cuz i'm used to root beer which tends to be flatter normally)....nor do i know why it's only with the coke/can combination (either cuz coke is extra-bubbly, or maybe i've just never noticed it any other time)...

but yes. strange. very strange.

F1 Boston was quite cool....not quite as hot as i had hoped, but i'm definately glad i went (a big shout to paul, who i'm sure will never read this, whom i went with...it was cool!...and a "sorry meyng" shoutout to denton, who i had thought i was going to go with until like the last minute...we'll figure out something else to do at some point....)

but yea...coolness...the cars were uhhh hard as hell to control (well, if you wanted to go around the corners with anything resembling "control" or "speed", at least, and if you didn't want to hit the walls... :-P )....it didn't help that EVERY PERSON we raced against had done it several times before :-P

but we had fun...so yea, it was good.

oh and yea...they are seriously (as paul put it quite eloquently).. "bumper cars with balls"....there was this bumper-guard thing all the way around them, so your wheels couldn't even hit anything....the worst we saw happen (other than the occasional-and-expected spin-out) was someone somehow getting UNDER the bumper/wall-things made of tires....they just stopped the other cars, had him get out...then just pulled his car out from under the tires, started it back up, and he was on his way (and no, that wasn't during our race...we had to wait for over 2 hours before we got to race :-p)

but yes...quite hot...and quite not-scary, if you ask me.... ;)

i'd love to go back (tho not THAT often, especially at 20-something bucks a shot)...but yea, coolness :)

ok so i don't even HAVE the game...and i'm hooked on the music from it...for two days i've had "kata-mari dama-sheee" stuck in my head (which is how it's pronounced in track 3 of the soundtrack, "Katamari on the Rock [Intro Movie]"...but seriously, this music owns me so much...i can't wait to get this game...

Marino Lookout Farm is quite a hot place...

this past saturday was my second time there (1st was last year)....they have more fruit (and indeed, more KINDS of fruit) than i thought a place has any right to contain...$4 gets you a train pass-thingy (stamp on your hand)...you need the "train" to get around the place, cuz of how HUGE it is....we seriously were almost LOST at times, trying to figure out how to get out of the trees and back to the "train" route...(i use the quotes cuz it LOOKS kinda like a trolly-like train, but the "engine" up front just has like a diesel engine or something (ie it's a truck), and it all runs on wheels, not a track...but it's still hot...

anyway, yea...i came away with like 11 pounds of fruit (at $1.50/lb.) (including like 3 or 4 types of apples, some asian pears, and some plums...)...plus some (AWESOME) apple cider...we had "gelato" (italian ice cream, apparently)...it was very good...and i got some grapes (which i've yet to try)...

last night kim and kristin made a couple apple pies (which came out GREAT, using their mom's recipe ;) )....we also made some caramel apples, which i've yet to try :-P

so yea....HOT! :)
